Employee Benefits

HEALTH INSURANCE 
This is a voluntary benefit for Durham Housing Authority (DHA) employees.  DHA contributes between 69-92% of the cost. This benefit is effective 30 days following the date of hire. 
 
DENTAL INSURANCE 
This is a voluntary benefit for employees. DHA contributes 77-85% of the cost. This benefit is effective 30 days following the date of hire.  
 
LIFE INSURANCE 
Life insurance is furnished at no cost to the employee in the amount of two times the employee’s annual salary, subject to a maximum of $200,000 rounded to the next higher $1,000 if not already a multiple of $1,000.  This benefit is effective 30 days following the date of hire.  Employees have the option to purchase additional life insurance at their own cost. If additional life insurance is not elected during the first 30 days of employment, enrollment will be subject to the completion of an Evidence of Insurability form. 
 
LONG-TERM DISABILITY 
Long-term disability is furnished at no cost to the employee. The employee will be eligible to receive a weekly benefit of 66.67% of their basic weekly income. This benefit is effective 30 days following the date of hire.  
 
RETIREMENT 
DHA PENSION PLAN 
This is a mandatory benefit. Eligible employees are required to participate in the pension plan following three months of entry service.  DHA contributes 5% and the employee contributes 2% of the gross wages each payroll.  Wages do not include overtime and bonuses.  This benefit is effective (January or July) following three full months of the employee’s entry service.   
 
457 DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN 
This is a voluntary benefit. This benefit is effective immediately unless the employee opts out of the automatic enrollment arrangement.  Eligible employees may choose to contribute from 1% to 100% of their total pay.  DHA will match up to 2%.  Maximum contribution is subject to IRS law.  
 
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS 
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM 
Employee assistance is available at no cost to both employees and their family members eligible for DHA benefits. This benefit is effective after 30 days of employment. 
 
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM 
This benefit is effective after one year of employment. DHA will reimburse employees up to $2,000 based on budget constraints in any fiscal year.  Courses must be taken at an approved accredited college, university, or technical institution. Refer to the Personnel Policy Manual for more details. 
 
HOLIDAYS
DHA furnishes employees with the following paid holidays annually: 
New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day 
 
Sick Leave  
Eligible employees will begin earning sick leave (8 hours accrued monthly) after their first full month of employment and may begin taking leave immediately. Employees of another public housing authority, HUD, or local or state governmental organization, who join DHA with no interruption in service between said former employer and DHA, may transfer up to 30 days of their unpaid sick leave
 
Vacation Leave  
Eligible employees will begin earning vacation leave after their first full month of employment and may begin taking leave after three full months of employment.
