September 8, 2025 Vanguard Apartments Grand Opening and Dillard Apartments Groundbreaking

DHA and Laurel Street are pleased to announce the grand opening celebration of The Vanguard Apartments and groundbreaking for the next phase of the East Main redevelopment, Dillard Street Apartments. The Vanguard Apartments is a mixed-income development that includes one, two, and three-bedroom apartment homes for individuals and families. Building amenities include storage lockers, a multipurpose room, fitness center, computer lab, playground, and outdoor picnic space. Vanguard represents the first phase of the redevelopment of two aging public housing properties, 519 East Main and Liberty Street Apartments, into a vibrant, mixed income community. 21 of the units are prioritized for former residents of 519 E. Main and Liberty Street.

June 2025 ASCEND Program Graduates

Congratulations to our ASCEND Program graduates! After temporarily relocating from their former homes, they’re all gearing up for a fresh start in their new redeveloped downtown neighborhood! June 13, 2025 Demolition of 519 E. Main Begins

Durham, N.C. (June 13, 2025) The Durham Housing Authority (DHA) reached a major milestone in the redevelopment of 214 public housing units in downtown Durham, as demolition began on the last remaining original building, 519 E. Main Street Apartments. The redevelopment of 519 E. Main and the adjacent Liberty Street Apartments is supported by a $40 million Choice Neighborhoods Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, $15 million from the City of Durham's Forever Home, Durham program, and over $120 million in private investment.

Do you want to be an artist? DHA’s Jobs Plus team invited Professor Brian Gonzales from NCCU to host an event titled “Professional Art & What it Takes” at the TA Grady Center! On April 11 at Hayti Heritage Center, representatives of the Durham Housing Authority and Durham Community Partners hosted an open house to share details about Fayette Place, a new multi-family residential development just south of downtown. The public event was a highly anticipated update to many previous community feedback sessions on the progress of an important tear-down and rebuild that is a centerpiece of the DHA’s Downtown & Neighborhood Plan.

2021 Winter Wonderland Event

On Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, the Community Life team hosted an awesome Winter Wonderland holiday event at the Calvert Place Community Center.
