DURHAM, NC - Today, the Durham Housing Authority (DHA) has announced that the nonpartisan voter rights organization, You Can Vote, will host a voter registration drive at various locations in Durham on Tuesday, February 4th from 4:00PM - 7:00PM to educate and assist McDougald residents with voter registration while residents are relocated. If relocated residents are not staying at one of these hotels, they are welcome to come to one to register. The deadline to register for early voting is Friday, February 7th, and early voting will begin on Thursday, February 13th. The confirmed locations that You Can Vote will be at include:

  1. Millennium Durham - 2800 Campus Walk Ave.
  2. Comfort Inn - 4507 NC Hwy. 55
  3. Extended Stay America - 4919 S. Miami Blvd.
  4. Days Inn - 3460 Hillsborough Rd.

"As a nonpartisan organization, we are excited to ensure that these Durham citizens understand their voting rights, especially as those rights relate to their current address or eligibility status," said Kate Fellman, founder and executive director of You Can Vote. "Voting is a vital part of our democracy and that is why we work to ensure all North Carolinians know their rights, make a plan, and vote in 2020 and beyond."

DHA and You Can Vote have partnered in the past on voter registration efforts and this is a continuation of the great relationship. We look forward to working together throughout the upcoming election cycle and thank them for their great work educating voters on their rights and ensuring they are registered to vote.

"We hope that all of our eligible residents will be able to register to vote so that they can advocate with us for solutions to the chronic under-funding of public housing by casting their votes at the ballot box. We thank the Durham County Board of Elections for their support during this time," said Anthony Scott, CEO of the Durham Housing Authority.

DHA would also like to thank the Good Neighbor Fund for their continued efforts. This group, led by Leonardo Williams, with assistance from Fran Castillo and Liz Jackson, have raised over $24,000, collected over 17,000 donated items, and now have over 300 individual volunteers and 40 organizations working together to help the people of McDougald Terrace.
