Thanksgiving & Holiday Safety Tips
As we gather for the holidays, let's focus on gratitude and safety. These quick tips will help prevent fires, foodborne illness, and theft this Thanksgiving season.

Cooking & Food Safety

  • Stay in the kitchen - unattended cooking causes most home fires.
  • Keep kids & pets 3 ft from hot surfaces.
  • Never deep-fry a frozen turkey; always thaw fully and fry outdoors.
  • Wash hands before handling food; use clean utensils & cutting boards.
  • Cook to safe temperatures (°F): Turkey/Chicken 165 | Ground Meat 160 | Fish 145 | Leftovers 165.
  • Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours to prevent bacteria growth.

Heating & Fire Prevention

  • Keep space heaters 3 ft from curtains, bedding, and furniture.
  • Plug directly into the wall - no extension cords.
  • Blow out candles and turn off decorations before bed or travel.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors this month.

Home & Package Security

  • Don't post travel plans or deliveries online.
  • Bring packages inside quickly or use secure pickup locations.
  • Keep valuables out of sight from windows & lock all doors and windows before travel.

Travel & Community Awareness

  • Expect holiday traffic - slow down & stay alert.
  • Use crosswalks and well-lit paths at night.
  • Report suspicious activity to DHA RSO or Durham Police (919-560-4600).

Wellness & Community Care

  • Check on neighbors and seniors.
  • For support or mental health help: 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline | Durham Crisis Line 1-800-510-9132.

Stay Thankful. Stay Aware. Stay Safe.
