No Smoking Policy

The Time has come for The Housing Authority of Durham to implement our NO SMOKING POLICY.

EFFECTIVE September 1, 2017, The Housing Authority of Durham is Smoke Free. We have signs posted on the property and a designated area for those who smoke. Residents, please inform your guests of the changes as well.

This area that will be designated for a smoke area is not for use by children. Parents, you are responsible for talking to your children about not hanging around or playing in this smoking area.

For those adults who smoke, we expect folks to not hang out for a long period of time at the smoking area.  Adults are responsible for making sure cigarette butts go in the trash receptacle and not on the ground

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our office anytime at 919.683.1551.

NO SMOKING POLICY
The Housing Authority of Durham has designated all of our housing properties as a smoke free facility. The "Smoke Free" designation will be implemented through a lease addendum. There will be no smoking in entry ways, porches, community rooms, community bathrooms, within all interior living areas and in all areas within 25 feet of buildings. Smoking will be permitted on the grounds in a designated area assigned by the Housing Authority of Durham. This policy applies to all residents, guests, visitors, service personnel and employees.

Purpose of Smoke Free Policy - To mitigate the irritation and known health effects of secondhand smoke. Decrease the risk of smoke related fire to property and personal safety. Minimize the maintenance, cleaning, and redecorating cost associated with smoking.

Definition - The term "smoking" means inhaling, exhaling, breathing or carrying any lighted cigarette, cigar, pipe or other tobacco product, as well as any other similar lighted product in any manner or any form.

"No Smoking "signs will be posted outside on the properties and inside the office buildings.

If a resident smells tobacco smoke (or smoke substance of any kind) in any place in the building, they are to report this to the office as soon as possible. Management will respond and take appropriate action.

Designated Smoking Area - Each property will have a designated smoking area on each property.

Signage will be put up along with a trash receptacle.

This will be the only area for residents and guests to smoke on the property. This area will be monitored.

Residents will be asked to sign that they have read this statement. Resident signatures will be kept on file.
